A For-Hire Carrier is a motor carrier whose business is transporting other companies' property or passengers for compensation, as opposed to a Private Carrier, which transports its own goods as an operation incidental to some other primary business, like a grocery chain running its own trucks to supply its stores. This distinction matters because for-hire status generally requires the carrier to hold Operating Authority (Common and/or Contract) and meet higher minimum insurance requirements than most private carriers, since for-hire operations are considered higher-liability and subject to more direct FMCSA economic regulation. FMCSA's data further splits for-hire into "Authorized For-Hire" (holding standard operating authority, subject to normal economic regulation) and "Exempt For-Hire" (transporting certain commodities or performing operations exempted from that regulation, like hauling unprocessed agricultural products). Filtering to active, for-hire carriers with real equipment on file is one of the more effective ways to separate genuine, operating trucking businesses from the much larger pool of registered entities that includes private fleets, brokers, and other non-trucking registrants.
A produce distributor with its own delivery trucks is a private carrier; a trucking company that hauls produce for that distributor under contract is a for-hire carrier.
