Hotshot Trucking

A medium-duty pickup (typically a one-ton dually) pulling a gooseneck or bumper-pull trailer. Used for smaller, time-sensitive loads and equipment hauling that don't require a full commercial tractor-trailer.

Hotshot hauling uses a heavy-duty pickup — usually a one-ton dually — pulling a gooseneck or bumper-pull trailer, rather than a semi tractor pulling a full trailer. It's a common way to enter trucking with less upfront equipment cost than a Class 8 tractor, but the weight threshold for needing a Class A CDL is based on combined gross vehicle weight, not vehicle type — many hotshot combinations exceed 26,001 lbs and require the same CDL a semi driver needs.

Hotshot describes a trailer or equipment configuration, not a cargo type — FMCSA's public carrier data records what a carrier hauls (from its MCS-150 filing), not what equipment it uses to haul it. That means we can't reliably identify which carriers in our directory run hotshot equipment, so this page doesn't include a filtered carrier list. Browse the full carrier directory instead, or pick one of the equipment types below — all backed by real FMCSA cargo data.
